Doing good journalism? Get money for it!

It’s that time of year again! The journalism department is awarding about $10,000 in scholarships for the 2012-2013 school year! The scholarships are open to all majors.

The deadline for all of them is 5pm on March 30th to Dr. Campbell’s office in Williams 201 or to his mailbox on the first floor.

The Timothy J. Rogers scholarship
– Available to students who are active in one or more Miami student-run media. This scholarship is awarded in memory of Dr. Timothy J. Rogers, who taught Spanish and Portuguese at Miami and who mentored journalism students as the longtime chair of what is now called the Committee on Student Media Organizations.
– 2012-2013 award: One $2,000 scholarship
– Application requirements: Essay should outline growth as a journalist and lessons learned through frequent publication or airing of work; GPA of 3.5 in major and 3.2 overall; three to five samples of best journalism work (reporting, writing, editing, design, and/or photography).

Memorial Tournament Journalism Scholarship
– Available to 2012-2013 seniors studying print of broadcast journalism.
– 2012-2013 awards: Two $2,000 scholarships.
– Application requirements: Essay should outline growth as a journalist and lessons learned through frequent publication or airing of work; GPA of at least 3.5 in major and 3.2 overall; three to five samples of best journalism work (reporting, writing, editing, design, and/or photography); finalists interview with Memorial Tournament representative.

Emily J. Cordes scholarship
– Available to journalism students on the basis of academic merit.
– 2012-2013 award: Two $1,000 scholarships.
– Application requirements: Essay should highlight academic and journalistic accomplishments; application should also include DARS that illustrates academic success.

Lawler-Galeese scholarship
– Available to upperclass students from Fenwick, Lemon, Monroe, or Middletown high schools who demonstrate interest and skill in print journalism. If no student from these schools apply or qualify, the award can go to a student from elsewhere in Ohio.
– 2012-2013 award: Two $2,000 scholarships.
– Application requirements: Essays should highlight interest and/or skill in print journalism; application should also include proof of graduation from one of the specified high schools.

Michael Kelly prize
– Available to a journalism student who exhibits exemplary professionalism and ethical decision-making in journalism.
– 2012-2013 award: One $350 award.
– Application requirements: Essay should highlight dedication to professionalism and sound ethics in journalism.
