Miami University journalism students and faculty member Patti Newberry traveled to Athens, Ohio Saturday, Feb. 26 for the first Ohio Sunshine Summit at Ohio University. The students participated in a discussion about access to open meetings and records to kick off the day, which resulted in an overall feeling of frustration in the room.
We didn’t stop there. The day was full of networking with SPJ chapters and student journalists from Ohio University, Ohio State University, Kent State University, University of Cincinnati and professional journalists from the area. There were three concurrent sessions in the afternoon — one of which drafted a proposal for the Board of Regents to standardize public records and open meetings in the state of Ohio. SPJ President and WCPO I-Team reporter Hagit Limor concluded the day by showing some of her clips along with an inspirational speech.
Thanks to everyone for making this event possible!
The MU chapter of SPJ welcomes first-year Amanda Schumaker to the group!
You know what that means … Everyone’s doing it. And you should too.
How to join:
Step 1: Add yourself to the listserv.
Go to the listserv archives and look for MU-SPJ@listserv.muohio.edu. Click the link and join list.
Step 2: Join online. The fee for a year is $36 and $5 for our chapter fees. If you’re a first-year or a sophomore, I suggest joining for four years. It’s $100 and SO worth it.
Step 3: Come to weekly meetings and get involved! SPJ is a great line on your resume and members get special benefits. After college, it can provide for great networking and job opportunities.
